Time Trial Secretary's Report, 2011 – AGM, 28 October 2011

First of all, I offer my apologies for not being at the AGM, due to a previous appointment on the Halloween Ghost Train.............as a passenger!

Here is my report on the 2011 season which includes a summary of the main competitions. You can hear all the details at the Annual Dinner in November.

Club events continue to be well supported.

The main club competitions are the Evening 10 Series, the Jack Duckers Points Series and the Best All Rounder Championships. In addition, there are trophies for certain specific events.

The evening 10 series continues to be the main focus for many of the club's riders. Over 17 events, a total of 203 rides were done by club members in the series. The average of 12 per event was down again on recent years. Winning the Series Points Shield was Tim Rex, with Will Rollo in 2nd place (again) and Rob Kidd in 3rd place.

In the Ladies' competition, new member Amy Sheasby takes the winner's trophy in her first season.

Another new member, Tom Garbett takes the Booker Shield as best junior. He also takes the medal for greatest improvement in the series. Alex McCulloch and Korrey Williams took 2nd and 3rd places in the junior section.

The Mountain bike 10 Series trophy is awarded to Guy Frankfort.

The Jack Duckers Points Trophy, which is based on points scored in rides in a range of club events from the Hill climb to the 100 ,was won by Tim Rex from last year's winner, Bryan Cliff and Jim Gresty.

The Jack Duckers Veterans' Trophy, calculated on VTTA Standard times, was retained by Bryan with Rob Kidd and Jim Gresty in 2nd and 3rd places.

Rebecca Leaper takes the Ladies trophy.

The hill climb provided some fine evening entertainment with Mark Musgrove moving up a place from last year to take the winner's trophy.

Support for the Best All Rounder competitions was better this year. Four riders qualified for the Senior BAR, with Jim Gresty taking the honours. The same riders qualified for the Handicap BAR, with Pat Haywood coming out on top. Jim takes the Veterans' BAR, but there were no qualifiers for the Ladies BAR.

The Junior BAR currently requires 2 rides at 10 miles and 2 rides at 25 miles to qualify. Our current juniors were not able to complete the necessary rides, particularly 2 rides at the longer distance, so, for the second successive season, we have no qualifiers in that section. Whilst not wishing to dilute the standard of the Junior BAR, I propose that the competition is based on ONE ride at each distance. This would make the competition more achievable and bring it in line with the other club BAR competitions which only require one ride at each distance in order to qualify.

There are a number of other trophy winners and a full list will be available at the club dinner.

I would like to thank a number of people who have helped run the club's time trialling activities this year:

- Gill and Brian Morrison, for timekeeping and collating results

- Andy Durber, for running the evening 10 Series and signing all the club events

- Malcolm Woolley and Ian Hassall for timekeeping and for marshalling and signing, not only club events, but also West Cheshire and SCCA events

- and other club members who have marshalled and helped in other ways

A significant amount of time and effort goes into the local time trial programme. As well as running the 21 club events, the club is also involved in organising and/or marshalling some 15 events for the West Cheshire and Shropshire Associations to which we belong. This workload has for many years fallen on a small number of individuals and really should be spread wider. This season we introduced a "Marshalling Rota" for these events and asked club members to volunteer to marshal one or two events. In the main this was successful and a lot of riders (but not all) put their names forward. Thank you for that. The Rota will be continued again next year and I would ask you all to please consider volunteering to take on a small part of this work, without which there would be no races. If everyone marshalled just once, it would make such a difference.

Preparations are underway for next season. The Open 25 will again be held in late August and a full programme of club events is being applied for. The first events will be the 2up 10, the Hawkstone Hilly and the Battlefield 25, all in March. If there are any particular events you would like to see , or any changes to the club event programme, please do tell me, but quickly. Applications for club events have to be lodged by the end of November.

Cycling Time Trials, the governing body for time trialling, propose to increase the levy on club events for the 2012 season. Accordingly, club event entry fees will increase by £1 next year for all events.

If you are looking for targets for next season, there are, as well as the various club competitions, regional competitions in the SCCA, the West Cheshire, the MLCA and the Merseyside VTTA Group. As a club, we have a good record in these competitions.

For those of you looking to try long distance time trialling, the National 100 mile Championship is being promoted by Mo Cliff on behalf of the SCCA in July.

Details of all these will be available in a comprehensive newsletter and on the club website in February.

In the meantime, I intend to hold a get-together, on a Saturday morning before Christmas, at Tilstock VH, to which all racing members are invited, to discuss and co-ordinate our racing activities for next season. There are many competitions, at club, regional and national levels, which we could aim for. As a club, we are more than capable of winning team competitions most weeks, but, presently, we are not organised enough to do so. If you want to change that, let's start by talking about it. Watch the website and your email for further details.

As always, please do not hesitate to ask me if there is anything you want to know.
