Congratulations
to Christine Roberts & Rebecca Leaper:
The
Merseyside Ladies Prize Presentation and Buffet was a great success with ten
prize-winners being present to receive their awards.
Our Champion Rebecca Leaper traveling 99 miles from Llanidloes, Powys and
Christine Roberts winner of the Aubrey Bradburn 25 Cup made it from Whitchurch.
This makes all the hard work put in by the organizer Ruth Williams all
worth while, as well as allowing the riders to meet up with their rivals and so
inspire keenness for next season.

was an historic and memorable day for Shropshire Cycling by Brian Morrison
Andy Bason,
Wrekinsport CC’s star time trialist, having already earned National honours
this season at 50 and 100 miles travelled to Abergavenny to compete in the Welsh
National 12 hour race. Undaunted by his novice status in this discipline Andy
rode the entire race at a steady! 23 mph not only to take the Championship from
runner up Alun Owen of Abergavenny by a margin of 16 miles but also to set a new
Welsh competition record of 283 miles.
Andy was not
the only Shropshire rider to bring honours back to the county. Rebecca Leaper
of The North Shropshire Wheelers, also making her first attempt at this
distance won the Ladies Championship with a clear margin of 11 miles over her
nearest rival, Ann Wooldridge of Gloucester City CC, covering a distance of 224
miles in 12 hours.
Veteran Jim
Gresty, also of The North Shropshire Wheelers added even more to the ‘bag’.
The 63 year old from Market Drayton rode his best ever ‘12’ to record 254
miles and ‘capture’ the Welsh Veterans Championship. In addition Jim’s
ride meant that he had won The Marcher Trophy – a unique prize awarded to the
rider achieving the highest aggregate mileage in The Mersey Roads Club 24 hour
and the Welsh CA 12 hour event.
While the
seniors and veterans were battling on the Monmouth roads, 15 year old Chris
Wilkinson, another North Shropshire Wheeler was taking part in the final
stage of The Arriva Trains Youth Tour at Tredegar. The event consisted of three
stages – two circuit races and a time trial. Despite opposition from some
quality young hopefuls – including two members of the Welsh National Squad –
Chris won the time-trial and gained third place in the final circuit race giving
him a resounding overall win in the series. Definitely a rider to watch!
